Schools Can Now Use School-Led Tutoring Grant Funding to Pay for Supply Teachers
School-Led Tutoring Grant funding was launched in September to give schools another way of delivering catch-up tuition to underprivileged children. SLTG funds are paid directly to schools in three tranches across the year and are strictly ring-fenced for tuition. The funding pays for 75% of the cost of hiring a tutor and has proved popular with schools.
One question that school leaders have frequently been asking since the launch of the SLTG is, “can I use school-led tutoring grant funding to hire supply teachers to release my staff to deliver one-to-one and small group tuition?”.
Up until now, the answer has been no. However, the DfE has now decided to let schools use the funding to pay for 75% of the cost of a supply teacher so as to release class or subject teachers to conduct catch-up tuition themselves.
We believe schools will welcome this change. One of the guiding principles of the SLTG was to give schools greater control over how catch-up tuition is delivered, and this latest development is another positive expression of this.
Many schools have long argued that the person best placed to deliver tuition and close attainment gaps is the class teacher, who is aware of each pupil’s strengths and weaknesses and can adapt their tuition style to meet their needs.
Teaching Personnel’s nationwide network of branches is uniquely well placed to help schools make the most of their School-Led Tutoring Grant funding. Your local team will provide you with access to fully cleared, local teachers and teaching assistants on a supply basis to facilitate in-house tutoring; or experienced tutors to plan and deliver the catch-up tuition themselves.
As a Tuition Partner with the National Tutoring Programme since its inception, Teaching Personnel has built up a flexible workforce of trained tutors. We have the right in-house experience and expertise to help schools get the most out of NTP and SLTG-funded tuition.
To find out more about our approach to tuition, we recommend registering to attend our upcoming SLTG Webinar or speaking to one of our tuition teams.
