Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant – Preston

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive specialist school in Preston. The role involves working with pupils who experience social, emotional and mental health challenges, helping them to engage positively in learning and develop essential life skills.

Contract: Temporary to Permanent
Start Date: ASAP or January start

About the Role:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support children and young people who may display challenging behaviour or struggle with emotional regulation. Working closely with class teachers and pastoral staff, you will help create a calm, structured, and supportive environment that enables pupils to achieve their full potential both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs in small groups and on a one-to-one basis

  • Assist the class teacher in delivering personalised learning plans

  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing through consistent strategies

  • Build trusting relationships that encourage engagement and self-confidence

  • Contribute to the wider school ethos of inclusion, respect, and care

Requirements:

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH or behavioural needs (school, youth work, or residential care experience desirable)

  • Strong communication, empathy, and resilience

  • Ability to de-escalate situations and remain calm under pressure

  • A positive, proactive approach to supporting learning and development

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
