Job description

Teaching Personnel are recruiting for an experienced, confident, and proactive SEN Teaching Assistant to join a highly supportive primary specialist school in Bury, Manchester. This is a rewarding opportunity to work in a nurturing environment where you can make a genuine difference to pupils with a wide range of additional needs.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support a small class of pupils, helping them to access learning and achieve their individual targets through tailored support and encouragement.

You will work closely with the class teacher, other Teaching Assistants, and external professionals to create a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. The role requires someone who is confident managing challenging behaviours and supporting pupils with personal care needs where required.

A proactive and adaptable approach is essential, with a strong focus on promoting pupils' independence, communication skills, and emotional wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and within small group activities
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering personalised learning opportunities
  • Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs/ILPs)
  • Manage and respond to challenging behaviours using positive strategies
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and external professionals
  • Support pupils with personal care needs where required
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
  • Create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment
  • Promote pupils' social, emotional, and communication development
  • Encourage independence and positive engagement in learning

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience working with pupils with SEN is essential
  • Experience supporting children with a range of additional needs within a school, care, or specialist setting
  • Confident managing challenging behaviour
  • Willingness to support personal care needs
  • Strong understanding of inclusive practice and pupil-centred support
  • Proactive, resilient, and adaptable approach
  • Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Desirable Skills

  • Experience within a specialist SEN or alternative provision setting
  • Knowledge of a range of SEN needs, including ASD, SLCN, SEMH, and complex needs
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to undertake training)
  • Relevant qualifications
  • Experience working as an SEN Teaching Assistant

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
