Behaviour Support Assistant – Secondary SEMH Provision (Trafford)

Location: Trafford, Greater Manchester
Contract: Full-time, long-term

Are you passionate about supporting young people who face social, emotional and mental health challenges? This specialist SEMH provision in Trafford supports secondary-aged pupils with needs such as anxiety, trauma-related behaviours, attachment difficulties, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation and behavioural challenges. We are looking for a confident, patient and committed Behaviour Support Assistant to join the team and make a real difference.


About the Provision

This supportive and well-structured SEMH school works with pupils who need a nurturing, consistent and therapeutic approach. Staff work collaboratively to create a safe environment where students can re-engage with learning, build resilience and develop coping strategies.


The Role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students both in and out of the classroom. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote emotional wellbeing and engagement
  • Supporting students with self-regulation, conflict resolution and managing challenging behaviours
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils who may be disengaged or displaying signs of emotional distress
  • Assisting teaching staff with behaviour plans, risk assessments and personalised strategies
  • Helping maintain a calm, structured and safe learning environment
  • Supporting with de-escalation and restorative approaches when required
  • Encouraging positive decision-making and celebrating progress, no matter how small

What We’re Looking For

This role is ideal for someone with experience in education, youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, care or other roles involving challenging behaviour. We are looking for someone who is:

  • Confident, resilient and proactive in challenging situations
  • Experienced working with SEMH needs or behavioural challenges (desirable)
  • Calm under pressure and able to model positive emotional regulation
  • Able to build rapport quickly and communicate effectively with young people
  • Patient, empathetic and passionate about helping young people succeed
  • In possession of an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply through Teaching Personnel)
