Do you have a genuine passion for supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? You will be supporting pupils who experience anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional regulation difficulties, attachment challenges, trauma-related behaviours or ongoing behavioural needs.
A specialist provision in the Wigan area is looking for a committed and caring full‑time SEMH Teaching Assistant to join its supportive team. This position forms part of an exciting new partnership where Teaching Personnel is the exclusive recruitment provider for the trust, giving candidates priority access to all roles across their schools
About the Provision
The provision forms part of a well-regarded trust that delivers alternative, individualised education for pupils aged 11–16 who need additional emotional and behavioural support. It offers small class sizes, targeted therapeutic input, a strong pastoral framework, and a curriculum designed to re-engage learners who may have struggled to thrive in mainstream environments. The school is committed to helping pupils rebuild confidence, develop effective coping strategies, and make meaningful academic and personal progress.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
- Provide in-class support to pupils with a wide range of SEMH needs
- Assist the teacher with lesson delivery, differentiation and behaviour management
- Build strong, nurturing relationships that help pupils develop trust and emotional resilience
- Support pupils with emotional regulation using trauma-informed, restorative strategies
- Deliver 1:1 and small group interventions focused on social skills and wellbeing
- Help maintain a safe, structured and positive learning environment
Essential Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- Prior experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willing to obtain one)
- Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, supportive approach
- The ability to build rapport quickly with vulnerable learners
- Resilience, patience and a genuine passion for supporting young people
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
