1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant - Wigan
Teaching Personnel are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and proactive 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a secondary school pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs on a full-time basis. This role is ideal for someone who is committed to helping young people overcome barriers to learning, regulate their emotions, and build confidence both inside and outside the classroom. You will be working closely with a child who requires consistent, nurturing support and a calm, patient presence throughout the school day.
This is a highly rewarding position where you can make a genuine, lasting impact on a young person’s life, helping them navigate challenges such as anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, attachment needs, trauma-related behaviours, and difficulties with social interaction.
Key Responsibilities
In this 1:1 SEMH role, you will:
- Provide tailored emotional and behavioural support, helping the pupil develop regulation strategies, resilience, and positive coping mechanisms.
- Build a trusting, consistent relationship that encourages engagement, confidence, and a sense of safety within the school environment.
- Support the pupil during lessons, breaking down tasks, reinforcing instructions, and encouraging participation at a pace that suits their needs.
- Implement personalised behaviour plans and interventions, working closely with the SENCO, pastoral team, and teaching staff.
- Assist with managing triggers and de-escalating heightened emotions, ensuring the pupil can re-engage positively following periods of dysregulation.
- Encourage social skills, communication, and positive peer interactions, helping the pupil develop healthy relationships within school.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, SEND, youth work, or pastoral support.
- A calm, patient, and emotionally resilient approach.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build meaningful connections.
- Confidence working 1:1 with pupils who may display challenging behaviours.
- The ability to remain consistent, positive, and solution-focused during difficult moments.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
- A genuine passion for helping young people thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
