Teaching Assistant – Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)

Location: Swinton

Are you passionate about supporting pupils who need an alternative approach to education? Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to work within a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Swinton area. PRUs support students who may present with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, challenging behaviour, gaps in learning, or those who have been excluded from mainstream education. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact on young people who require patience, resilience, and consistent support.


The Role

As a Teaching Assistant in this PRU setting, you will play a vital role in helping students re-engage with education and build confidence both academically and socially.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting the class teacher with planning and delivering tailored learning activities
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours in a calm, professional manner
  • Building strong, positive relationships with pupils to encourage engagement
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs and promoting emotional regulation
  • Helping create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to teaching staff

✅ Requirements

We are looking for someone who is committed, adaptable, and confident working in a specialist setting.

Essential requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people (school, care, youth work, or similar)
  • Strong behaviour management skills and resilience
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
  • Ability to build positive relationships with challenging pupils
  • Must be a driver with access to a vehicle
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)

Desirable:

  • Experience within a PRU, SEMH, or alternative provision setting
  • Team Teach or similar behaviour management training
