What’s the Difference Between the Roles?
Graduate Teaching Assistant (TA):
As a TA, you’ll work closely with teaching staff to support students in and out of the classroom, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). You may be assigned to a specific year group or department and will often work 1:1 or with small groups. This role is ideal for graduates looking to gain school-based experience before moving on to teacher training or educational psychology.
Experience required: Prior classroom experience is essential – ideally in a support capacity with SEND students.
Cover Supervisor:
As a Cover Supervisor, you’ll step in to deliver lessons when the regular teacher is absent. Using the lesson plans provided, you’ll manage the classroom, keep students engaged, and ensure work is completed. This role requires confidence, resilience, and strong classroom management skills.
Experience required: You must have prior experience leading a classroom—this could be through previous Cover Supervisor roles, working as an HLTA, or teaching experience (qualified or unqualified).
What We Offer:
-
Roles within a supportive and forward-thinking trust of schools
-
Opportunities in various areas across Birmingham – likely there’s a school close to you
-
Ongoing training and CPD opportunities
-
A potential route into teacher training via the trust’s internal programmes
-
Friendly, dedicated consultants who will support you throughout your placement
Requirements:
-
A university degree or equivalent
-
Experience working in a classroom is essential (TA or Cover Supervisor capacity)
