About the Role

We are seeking compassionate, resilient, and enthusiastic Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Practitioners to support primary-aged pupils within mainstream schools, specialist resource bases, and ALN units across Swansea and Carmarthenshire.

This rewarding role involves supporting children with a wide range of additional learning needs, helping them access education, develop confidence, regulate emotions, and achieve their individual potential. You will work closely with teachers, ALNCos, therapists, and families to create positive and inclusive learning experiences.

The Pupils You May Support

As an ALN Practitioner, you may work with pupils presenting with:

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

• Social communication and interaction difficulties.
• Sensory processing needs.
• Emotional regulation challenges.
• Difficulties managing transitions and changes in routine.
• Use of visual timetables and structured support strategies.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

• Difficulties maintaining attention and focus.
• Impulsivity and hyperactivity.
• Organisational and executive functioning challenges.
• Need for movement breaks and adapted learning approaches.

Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

• Delayed language development.
• Difficulties understanding or expressing language.
• Use of communication aids, visual supports, or Makaton.
• Support plans developed alongside Speech and Language Therapists.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Needs

• Anxiety and emotional dysregulation.
• Attachment and trauma-related difficulties.
• Low self-esteem and confidence.
• Behaviour as a form of communication.

Learning Difficulties and Complex Needs

• Moderate and severe learning difficulties.
• Global Developmental Delay (GDD).
• Down Syndrome.
• Complex medical and developmental needs.
• Pupils working significantly below age-related expectations.

Physical and Sensory Needs

• Hearing or visual impairments.
• Physical disabilities requiring specialist support.
• Mobility and accessibility needs.
• Personal care support where required.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small group support.
• Implement Individual Development Plans (IDPs).
• Support pupils' academic, social, and emotional development.
• Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
• Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs.
• Foster independence and confidence.
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to pupil reviews.
• Work collaboratively with school staff, families, and external professionals.

What We're Looking For

• Experience working with children or young people with ALN, SEND, SEMH, or additional support needs.
• A patient, nurturing, and adaptable approach.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to remain calm and positive in challenging situations.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle preferred.
• Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
• EWC registration (or willingness to register).
