Job description

Behaviour Support Practitioner – Behaviour Unit

Via Teaching Personnel | Full-Time & Part-Time Opportunities

Teaching Personnel are proud to be working in partnership with a specialist behaviour unit to recruit resilient, compassionate and trauma‑informed Behaviour Support Practitioners.

This is a role for someone who understands that behaviour is communication — and that while some days can be demanding, the impact you make can be truly life‑changing.
No two days are the same, and every day matters.

About the Setting

The setting is a highly specialised behaviour unit supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom also have Additional Learning Needs (ALN).

Pupils may:

  • Have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences
  • Display behaviours that may be out of the norm
  • Become dysregulated due to environmental or emotional triggers

The environment is structured, nurturing and child‑centred, with a strong focus on:

  • Emotional regulation and co‑regulation
  • De‑escalation and positive handling strategies
  • Use of safe spaces away from triggers
  • Relationship‑based, trauma‑informed practice

Staff work closely together to provide consistent support, boundaries and reassurance throughout the school day.

The Role

As a Behaviour Support Practitioner, you will:

  • Support pupils on a 1:1 and small‑group basis
  • Respond confidently and calmly to challenging and high‑intensity behaviours
  • Remove pupils from triggering environments when required
  • Support pupils to re‑regulate emotions using trauma‑informed strategies
  • Help pupils return to learning when they are ready
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who struggle to engage
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and support teams
  • Be a steady, reassuring presence during moments of distress or overwhelm

⚠️ This role can be challenging — pupils may exhibit behaviours that require patience, consistency and emotional resilience. However, for the right person, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.

Sport & Physical Activity Experience

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who can bring sport, physical activity or coaching into a school setting.

Have you previously worked in sports coaching and are looking to implement this within an education environment?
✅ Do you understand the power of physical activity for emotional regulation, routine, confidence and engagement?

Previous experience in sports coaching, mentoring or physical wellbeing roles is an excellent fit for this setting.

✅ The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Have experience working with SEMH and/or ALN
  • Have a trauma‑informed background (education, care, youth work, mental health, or similar)
  • Understand behaviour as a form of communication
  • Can remain calm, reflective and resilient under pressure
  • ❤️ Are passionate about supporting vulnerable young people
  • Have experience in PRUs, specialist settings or behaviour units (desirable)

This role is ideal for those who want to make a genuine difference, not just deliver lessons.

Why Work With Teaching Personnel?

Working through Teaching Personnel means you’ll receive:

  • ‍ A dedicated consultant who understands specialist education
  • Access to exclusive CPD and specialist training
  • Weekly pay
  • ⏰ Flexible working options where possible
  • Ongoing pastoral and professional support
  • Opportunities to progress into long‑term or permanent positions

We take pride in matching the right people to the right settings, ensuring positive outcomes for both staff and pupils.

Requirements to Join Teaching Personnel

To come on board with us, you’ll need:

  • ✅ An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
  • ✅ Right to work in the UK
  • ✅ Relevant experience or strong transferable skills
  • ✅ Two professional references
  • ✅ A genuine commitment to supporting pupils with complex needs

Ready for a role that challenges you, grows you, and truly matters?

If you’re passionate about supporting pupils who need patience, understanding and structure — we would love to hear from you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.

We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer all our registered candidates FREE child protection and prevent duty training. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
