Job description

Do you have an ability to relate to and communicate with young people who are in danger of making the wrong choices in life?

Have you got experience in Youth Work, Youth Offending, Care or Counselling?

We want to hear about it.

The opportunity

Teaching Personnel work with a number of Pupil Referral Units, schools which provide an alternative education to students who have been excluded from mainstream school, due to specific social, emotional and mental health needs.
Within these Education provisions, the students attending have a mixture of needs and vulnerabilities related to these issues.

Your official title is of 'Teaching Assistant', however with the nature of the needs, your role goes above the associated responsibilities of curriculum support.
Students may display challenging behaviour, a refusal to concentrate or engage and generally act disruptively. You will need to act as a role model and calming influence whilst supporting them, having an easy going but resilient attitude, and directing and advising them towards appropriate behaviour.
You will need to be encouraging and motivating, helping the students to believe they can achieve more for themselves by applying more effort to their education.
Some mentoring and intervention work may be required, and general emotional support.

The curriculum is based on a number of vocational subjects as well as core subjects to meet the minimum requirements of secondary education. The vocational subjects suit a more active mind and hands on attitude to learning as well as improving focus in the classroom. You will be required to supervise the students and support the teacher and other assistants during lesson times.

This role is expected to be challenging but can reap many rewards in terms of job satisfaction. Ideally you will have experience in a similar role or relevant experience. You must also have a child workforce DBS which is registered to the update service.

*Contracts are usually hired on a temporary basis with an opportunity to becoming permanent based on your performance in the school.*
