Social, Emotional, Mental Health Learning Support Assistant / Trainee

Location: Salford

Contract: Tempoary to Permenent

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Setting: We are a dedicated alternative education provision, providing a supportive and nurturing environment for students with severe social, emotional, and mental health challenges (SEMH). Our specialist provision offers tailored support to help students complete their basic GCSEs and develop essential life skills. Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have experience within the UK care system. We take a trauma-informed approach to education, recognising the unique needs of each individual and providing a safe space for growth and learning.

Role Overview: We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Learning Support Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting students with SEMH needs, including anxiety and depression, to engage with their education and achieve their full potential. Working collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and external agencies, you will provide tailored interventions and strategies to address the diverse needs of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, including anxiety and depression, to facilitate their engagement with learning.
  • Develop and implement individualized learning plans in collaboration with teachers and other professionals, taking into account students' specific needs, strengths, and areas for development.
  • Utilise a range of strategies and resources to promote positive behavior management and emotional regulation within the classroom environment.
  • Support students in developing essential life skills, such as communication, resilience, and self-regulation, to enhance their overall well-being and readiness for transition to further education or employment.
  • Engage in regular training and professional development opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills in supporting students with SEMH needs within a trauma-informed framework.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs, including anxiety and depression, preferably within a specialist provision or similar setting desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Flexibility, resilience, and a positive attitude towards supporting students with complex needs in overcoming barriers to learning.
  • Relevant qualifications or training in areas such as special educational needs, mental health, or psychology (desirable).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
