Job description
Teaching Support Assistant-
Location- Penarth
Salary- £92.63/ day
Contract type- Full time (Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm).
About the Role-
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Support Assistant to join our specialist learning environment, working closely with teachers to help create a positive, inclusive, and nurturing atmosphere for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN).
The successful candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and eager to develop their practice, supporting learners with a wide range of needs including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), and physical disabilities (PD). The role involves providing support both in the classroom and across the wider school setting, helping pupils to access learning, build independence, and feel safe, valued, and encouraged.
A calm, patient, and friendly approach is essential, alongside strong teamwork skills and a genuine passion for ensuring every child is included, understood, and supported to reach their full potential.
Requirements-
- No previous experience supporting children or young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is required but experience within a specialist or therapeutic SEN setting is highly beneficial.
- A positive, flexible, and proactive attitude, with the ability to remain calm and maintain a good sense of humour in a dynamic learning environment.
- A genuine passion for supporting learners with a range of needs, including those who benefit from practical, hands‑on sessions such as workshop activities, music-based learning, and bike maintenance.
- A Child and Adult Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (support can be provided to complete this if needed).
- Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC), or willingness to register before starting the role.
- A full UK driving licence and access to personal transport.
About the School-
Our specialist SEN provision supports approximately 80 pupils aged 7–19, all of whom have a range of Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Learners often benefit from highly individualised programmes, including 1:1 and small‑group support designed to help them feel safe, regulated, and ready to engage with learning.
The school follows a trauma‑informed, therapeutic approach, creating a calm, consistent environment where pupils can build trust, independence, and confidence at their own pace. Alongside classroom teaching, the curriculum includes a strong emphasis on practical and creative learning, offering pupils access to specialist workshops such as music, bike maintenance, radio broadcasting, and hands‑on vocational activities.
Learning extends beyond traditional lessons, with personalised timetables and experiences that help pupils develop life skills, communication, resilience, and readiness for their next steps.
