SEMH Teaching Assistant – The Wirral

A leading alternative provision school in The Wirral is dedicated to supporting young people who have experienced challenges in mainstream education. Many of the students have special educational needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties, with a number holding Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The school provides a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every student is encouraged to thrive and achieve their full potential.

The Role

The school is seeking a compassionate, resilient, and proactive SEMH Teaching Assistant to join its dedicated team. The successful candidate will support students with a range of needs, helping them to manage their emotions and behaviours, while building strong, trusting relationships that encourage growth and learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the delivery of tailored educational programmes to meet the unique needs of each student.

  • Providing one-to-one and group support for students with SEMH needs.

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with EHCPs.

  • Building positive, supportive relationships with students to foster trust, confidence, and engagement.

  • Working collaboratively with teachers and support staff to provide consistent, holistic care.

  • Promoting a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.

  • Responding to challenging behaviours calmly and effectively, using appropriate de-escalation strategies.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, preferably in an educational setting.

  • Understanding of EHCPs and how to support individual learning needs.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach to managing challenging situations.

  • Empathy, sensitivity, and a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
