An all age (2-19) Special School in Harrogate are looking to appoint a Teaching Assistant on a part-time, casual basis this term.

The school is situated on the outskirts of Harrogate, in Starbeck, and is within walking distance of the local train station, as well as benefitting from good transport links from North and West Yorkshire. The school caters for pupils with complex additional needs including Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties, Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, and many pupils also suffer from medical conditions which have a significant impact on their learning.

As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will embrace the role of supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and will understand that the pupils have very specific, diverse and individual educational needs which need to be met in a carefully considered and creative way.

You will have a sound understanding of meeting the needs of SEN learners, including the following aims:

  • Pupils leave school post-19 as independent and autonomous as possible with the skills to make their own choices in life, whether this is at home, in activities, for courses of further study, or employment
  • Pupils are supported to become active learners who can effectively communicate their needs and wants
  • Appropriate curriculum pathways are identified for each pupil, allowing them to access the most suitable curriculum offer
  • Staff are committed to providing students with a planned programme of careers education, information and guidance, enabling students to develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge.
  • Lessons are delivered on an individual basis, and in small groups, and is tailored to the needs of each student

In addition to supporting access to the curriculum, a key part of your role will include attending to the holistic needs of pupils, including support with feeding and with personal care. You may be required to implement specific programmes as directed by key therapists including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and will support the medical team in attending to pupils’ specific medical needs.

You will join the team on a part-time, casual basis, ensuring flexibility to cover staff absences and availability to work at short-notice. This would be ideal for a candidate who is seeking a flexible role who has experience within the education or health care sector.

We welcome applications from experienced Teaching Assistants, Support Workers and caregivers who have previously supported individuals with additional needs.
