Southgate Teaching Assistant

A special needs school in Southgate are currently seeking a teaching assistant to support in a KS1 autism class located within walking distance from Cockfosters station. The school caters to students all of which have a statement of special educational needs such as autism, Down syndrome and those with physical disabilities. The school look to create a fun and interactive learning environment for students with special educational needs. They have recently renovated their facilities to include a state of the art sensory room including a sensory garden.

Your role as a teaching assistant will be to provide 1:1 support for students with autism in a primary class. Some students have a range of complex needs and will need the use of non-verbal forms of communication such as PECS and Makaton techniques. It is not a requirement to be fully trained in using both of PECS or Makaton but will be an advantage. The school are looking for an individual who shows real enthusiasm for supporting students with special educational needs. Children with special educational needs are of a guarded nature and teaching assistants need to be able to build rapport with students.
