Job Description 

This role involves providing dedicated support to pupils with special educational needs within a school setting. The postholder works closely with teaching staff to assist in delivering tailored learning programmes and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. The role requires patience, understanding, and the ability to adapt to varying individual needs to promote pupils’ educational and social development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Support pupils with special educational needs to access the curriculum effectively and participate fully in school activities.
• Assist in implementing individual education plans and behaviour management strategies under the guidance of teaching staff.
• Provide one-to-one or small group support to pupils, adapting resources and approaches to meet specific learning requirements.
• Monitor and record pupil progress and report observations to teaching staff to inform planning and intervention.
• Support the development of pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural skills within the classroom and during other school activities.
• Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment, ensuring the well-being of pupils at all times.
• Collaborate with teaching staff, external professionals, and parents/carers to contribute to holistic pupil development.
• Assist with classroom organisation, including preparation and tidying of learning materials and resources.
• Adhere to school policies and procedures, including safeguarding and health and safety requirements.

Experience

• Previous experience working with children who have special educational needs in an educational setting.
• Experience supporting pupils with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.

Knowledge and Skills

• Understanding of special educational needs and inclusive education principles.
• Ability to implement behaviour management strategies appropriately.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with pupils, staff, and parents/carers.
• Patience, empathy, and the capacity to build positive relationships with pupils.
• Organisational skills to manage tasks and support classroom activities efficiently.
• Basic ICT skills to support learning and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

• Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent.
• Specialised training in supporting specific needs such as autism spectrum disorders, speech and language difficulties, or physical disabilities.
• First aid qualification relevant to the school environment.

Working Conditions

• The role is based within a school environment in Birkenhead, Merseyside.
• Full-time hours are expected, typically aligned with the school day, including term time.
• The position is temporary, with the duration subject to the needs of the school and funding.
• Occasional requirement to assist with physical activities and mobility support for pupils.
• Compliance with child safeguarding policies and procedures is mandatory.
• May involve working closely with pupils who require additional support, necessitating physical and emotional resilience.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
