SEN Teaching Assistant – Secondary SEN School

Location: Bury

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated, compassionate and proactive Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and forward-thinking secondary special school in Bury. This rewarding role involves supporting students aged 11–19 with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in a structured and nurturing environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and wants to make a meaningful difference in their education and wellbeing.

About the Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support students both in and out of the classroom, helping them to engage with learning, develop independence, and reach their full potential. You will work closely with teachers and a wider multi-disciplinary team to provide consistent, high-quality support tailored to individual needs.

The school offers a personalised approach to learning, with students following tailored pathways designed to support their academic, social and emotional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with SEN
  • Assist in delivering personalised learning activities
  • Support students with communication, social and emotional development
  • Help maintain a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and external professionals
  • Support students during transitions and throughout the school day
  • Encourage independence and celebrate student achievements

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people (SEN experience desirable)
  • A patient, caring and empathetic approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to adapt and respond to individual needs
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with additional needs
  • Full-time availability and commitment
  • Experience working in SEN or specialist school settings
  • Understanding of autism, communication difficulties or complex needs
  • Knowledge of behaviour and emotional support strategies

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
