Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – SEN School – Bolton

Teaching Personnel are seeking an experienced and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a specialist SEN school in the Bolton area. The school supports pupils with a range of complex Special Educational Needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Communication and Interaction needs, and sensory processing disorders. The successful candidate will be confident delivering learning to small groups, leading lessons in the absence of a teacher, and providing high-quality support to pupils with significant, varied needs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead small-group learning sessions and support whole-class teaching under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Deliver planned lessons independently when required, ensuring activities are adapted to suit individual EHCPs.
  • Provide support with complex SEN needs, including communication support (PECS/Makaton), sensory regulation, and behaviour management.
  • Assist with personal care, including toileting, feeding, and mobility support, following the school’s policies and training.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, contributing to reviews and planning.

Requirements

  • HLTA status or substantial experience in a higher-level support role within an SEN setting.
  • Experience supporting pupils with complex SEN such as ASC, PMLD, SLD, or communication needs.
  • An enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one through Teaching Personnel.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding, differentiation, and SEN strategies.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake personal care and follow moving & handling guidance.
  • Excellent communication, resilience, and a positive, nurturing approach.
