SEMH Teaching Assistant - Yeovil

We are currently looking to appoint a HLTA to support a KS3 phase teacher, on a temporary contract (full time basis), with potential for permanent role.

The School

Based in Yeovil, special school for students aged KS3 and KS4 who have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or a Statement of Special Educational Need (SSEN). In most cases the primary identified need is Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and behavioural difficulties, although the majority of students have additional special educational needs such as autistic spectrum condition, AD(H)D, speech, language and communication difficulties, opposition defiance and attachment disorders.

Key Areas of Work

- Supporting the delivery of quality teaching and learning within the secondary curriculum in the school

- Working within a framework set by the teacher, plan own role in lessons including the provision of feedback to pupils and colleagues on pupil's learning and behaviour

- Contribute effectively to the selection and preparation of teaching resources to meet the diversity of pupil's needs and interests

- Contribute to the planning of opportunities for pupils to learn in accordance with school policies and procedures.

- Focusing on meeting the needs of the whole child

Person Specification

- Required to be able to meet the Higher Level Teaching Assistant standards or have an equivalent qualification or experience

- GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths is an additional, minimum requirement, together with training in relevant learning strategies, e.g. Literacy

- Detailed knowledge and skills in matters such as the national curriculum for KS2 and age-related expectations of pupils; the main teaching and learning support methods and relevant testing/examination frameworks

- Experience and sound knowledge of supporting teaching across Key Stages, in particular proven experience of teaching pupils with SEMH within mainstream or specialist settings

- Understanding of principals of child development and learning processes and in particular, barriers to learning

- Good understanding and proven experience of managing health and safety arrangements in the work place, to include education off-site / beyond the classroom
