Mental Health Support Worker (SEMH)

This specialist SEMH secondary school in the Bolton area supports young people navigating anxiety, trauma, attachment difficulties, ADHD, conduct disorder, emotional dysregulation and school avoidance. They need a steady, proactive Mental Health Support Worker who can turn difficult days into meaningful progress and small wins.


What You’ll Do (Day to Day)

  • Build trusted relationships with pupils to boost engagement and emotional wellbeing
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to help pupils regulate emotions and re‑engage with learning
  • Use de‑escalation and restorative approaches to manage crisis moments safely and constructively
  • Implement personalised behaviour and support plans, in line with EHCP targets
  • Track and record behaviour, triggers and progress, sharing insights with the wider team
  • Collaborate with teachers, pastoral leads, SENCO and external professionals (e.g., CAMHS, EWMHS)
  • Support pupils in class, during transitions and unstructured times (break/lunch), maintaining consistency
  • Create a calm, trauma‑informed environment that reinforces boundaries, safety and belonging

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in SEMH, youth work, residential care, PRUs/alternative provision, mentoring or SEN support
  • Confident with behaviour support and using low‑arousal, de‑escalation strategies
  • Emotionally literate, patient and resilient—able to stay calm under pressure
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with young people and families
  • Comfortable with record-keeping, safeguarding and following school policies
  • Enhanced DBS (on the Update Service or willing to apply)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
