Teaching Assistant – SEMH Secondary School (Stockport)
Full‑time | Teaching Personnel
Teaching Personnel are looking for a patient, resilient and supportive Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH secondary school in the Stockport area. The school supports pupils aged 11–16 with a range of needs including ASC or ADHD, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Attachment Disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other specific learning disorders. Many young people have experienced adversity and require a calm, consistent and relationship‑focused approach.
⭐ The Role
As a Teaching Assistant within an SEMH setting, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small‑group support in lessons, particularly in core subjects
- Helping pupils regulate emotions, stay engaged and build confidence
- Supporting young people with ASC, ADHD, FASD, attachment needs and learning disorders
- Using positive behaviour strategies, de‑escalation and restorative approaches
- Assisting the teacher with differentiated learning activities and adapted resources
- Encouraging independence, resilience and social development
- Supporting emotional wellbeing and building strong, trusting relationships
- Contributing to personalised learning plans, behaviour plans and EHCP targets
- Promoting a safe, calm and inclusive environment for all learners
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH or challenging behaviours
- An understanding of Autism, ADHD, FASD, attachment needs, dyslexia and dyspraxia
- A calm, patient and nurturing approach to supporting pupils
- Confidence building rapport and offering emotional support
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Resilience and the ability to remain consistent and supportive under pressure
- A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning
Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
- Right to work in the UK
- References covering the last 2 years
- Commitment to safeguarding and behaviour support
- Willingness to complete CPD provided by Teaching Personnel

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
