Job description

Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Location: Southport
Contract Type: Full-Time, Temporary (Temp to Perm Opportunity)
Start Date: As soon as possible

An established Alternative Provision in Southport is looking for a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join their team. This full-time, temporary position has the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

You’ll be working with students who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and may face a variety of challenges including SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health), autism (ASC), ADHD, and learning difficulties. Your support will be key in helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver targeted interventions and support to students in small groups or one-to-one.

  • Implement personalised strategies to meet individual learning and behavioural needs.

  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support student development.

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for learning.

  • Contribute to planning and delivery of engaging, differentiated lessons.

  • Lead sessions and provide class cover where required, following pre-agreed plans.

  • Monitor and report on student progress, behaviour, and achievements.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • HLTA status or a relevant Level 4 qualification.

  • Proven experience working with SEND students, particularly those with EHCPs.

  • Strong knowledge of SEMH needs and effective support strategies.

  • Confident in behaviour management and de-escalation techniques.

  • Calm, resilient, and empathetic approach under pressure.

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.

  • Ability to form positive, trusting relationships with students.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in an alternative provision, PRU, or specialist setting.

  • Team Teach or other behaviour management training.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed or restorative practices.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
