Job description
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - SEN Secondary School
Blackley, Manchester
September 2026
£100–£120 per day
Do you have the skills and experience to support learners with additional needs while taking a leading role in the classroom?
Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) who would be interested in opportunities within a specialist secondary and post-16 setting in Blackley for the 2026/27 academic year.
This specialist provision supports pupils with a range of learning disabilities and additional needs, helping them to develop academically, socially, and emotionally in a structured and nurturing environment. The school caters for students across KS3, KS4 and Post-16, with all learners holding an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Staff work collaboratively to ensure every student receives the tailored support they need to thrive and achieve their individual goals.
The Role
As a HLTA, you will play an important role in supporting teaching and learning across the school. Working closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff, you will help deliver engaging learning experiences while promoting independence, confidence, and positive outcomes for students.
Responsibilities may include:
- Delivering planned lessons and learning activities in the absence of teaching staff.
- Leading small-group and targeted intervention sessions.
- Supporting students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.
- Working collaboratively with teachers and wider professionals to implement individual learning strategies.
- Promoting positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and student engagement.
- Monitoring progress and providing feedback on pupil development.
- Supporting students during transitions, breaktimes, and enrichment activities.
- Assisting with personal care where required.
- Helping to maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
No two days are the same, making this an ideal role for someone who is adaptable, proactive, and passionate about supporting young people with additional needs.
What We're Looking For
The school would particularly value candidates who:
- Hold a recognised HLTA qualification or have relevant experience in a similar position.
- Have experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs.
- Are confident leading learning activities and managing groups of students.
- Can build positive and trusting relationships with learners.
- Remain calm, patient, and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
- Are comfortable working collaboratively as part of a wider support team.
- Hold Team Teach training or are willing to undertake additional training.
- Are committed to helping students achieve greater independence and success.
Why Apply Through Teaching Personnel?
- Competitive daily rates of £100–£120 per day.
- Access to specialist SEND training and CPD opportunities.
- Ongoing guidance from a dedicated Teaching Personnel consultant.
- Opportunities to gain experience in specialist educational settings.
- Potential pathways into long-term and permanent positions.
- The chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with additional needs.
