Behaviour Support Assistant Required – Specialist Education Setting

Teaching Personnel are seeking a resilient and compassionate Behaviour Support Assistant to join a specialist school in Oldham from September. This is an exciting opportunity to support children and young people with additional needs, helping them develop positive behaviours, emotional regulation skills and confidence within a structured and nurturing environment.

The school supports pupils aged 4–19 with a range of additional needs, including:

  • Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

With a strong emphasis on inclusion, wellbeing and personal development, the school provides a tailored learning environment where pupils are encouraged to achieve their potential and prepare for life beyond education.

The Opportunity

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will play a key role in helping pupils manage emotions, develop coping strategies and engage positively with learning. Working closely alongside teachers, therapists and support staff, you will provide both classroom-based and individualised support to meet each pupil's needs.

This role is ideal for individuals who are calm under pressure, relationship-focused and passionate about supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning.

Key Duties

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with behavioural and additional learning needs
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with students
  • Supporting pupils during periods of emotional dysregulation
  • Implementing behaviour support strategies and personalised intervention plans
  • Encouraging positive social interactions and emotional resilience
  • Using visual communication tools, sensory resources and structured routines
  • Assisting pupils to access learning and remain engaged in lessons
  • Supporting with personal care, mobility and feeding requirements where necessary
  • Contributing to a safe, positive and inclusive school environment

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a calm, patient and proactive approach
  • Can confidently support pupils with complex behavioural and communication needs
  • Demonstrates resilience and strong interpersonal skills
  • Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Is committed to promoting inclusion and positive outcomes for young people
  • Is available for full-time, long-term work from September

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working in education, care or support settings
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEN
  • Understanding of behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
  • Knowledge of ASC, SLCN or related additional needs
