Job description

Graduate Route into Teaching – Secondary Schools

Weymouth | £23,000–£27,000 | January 2027

Looking for a Career That Makes Use of Your Degree?

Finished university and wondering what your next step could be?

If you’re confident, enjoy working with young people and want a career where you can genuinely make a difference, a move into teaching could be worth considering.

We’re recruiting graduates to join a two-year salaried pathway into teaching within secondary schools across Weymouth. You’ll start by gaining practical classroom experience before progressing onto your teacher training and working towards becoming a qualified teacher.

You’ll be earning from day one, with training and support throughout the programme.

What Will the First Year Look Like?

Your first year will be spent working full-time in a secondary school, where you’ll gain experience as a Cover Supervisor.

You’ll quickly become part of the school team and get a real understanding of what working in education involves.

Day to day, you could be:

  • Leading classes using work set by the usual teacher
  • Keeping students focused and engaged during lessons
  • Managing behaviour and creating a positive classroom environment
  • Supporting students who may need some extra help
  • Working closely with teachers and other school staff
  • Observing lessons and learning from experienced teachers
  • Taking part in training to develop your classroom skills

You won’t be expected to know everything straight away. The first year is about learning on the job, building your confidence and developing the skills you’ll need to become a teacher.

Progress into Teacher Training

After successfully completing your first year, you’ll move into the teacher training stage of the programme.

In year two, you’ll begin working towards your PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) while continuing to develop your experience in school.

As your training progresses, you’ll start taking more responsibility for planning and delivering lessons, supported by experienced teachers and mentors.

By the end of the two years, you’ll have gained valuable school experience alongside the qualifications needed to take the next step into your teaching career.

What You’ll Get

  • A salary of £23,000–£27,000
  • A January 2027 start
  • Two years of practical school-based experience
  • A structured pathway towards becoming a qualified teacher
  • Fully funded PGCE and QTS training
  • Support and mentoring throughout
  • Opportunities within secondary schools across Weymouth
  • Experience that will help you build a long-term career in education

Is This Right for You?

We’re particularly interested in hearing from graduates who are considering teaching but haven’t yet had the opportunity to gain much school experience.

To be considered, you’ll need:

  • A UK bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • A genuine interest in working with young people
  • Good communication skills
  • Confidence working with groups of students
  • A positive and professional approach
  • The willingness to learn and take on feedback
  • A genuine interest in developing a career in education

Your degree could be in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Psychology, Languages or another subject area.

You don’t need to have studied Education, and previous classroom experience isn’t essential. We’ll be looking for graduates with the right attitude and the potential to develop into confident teachers.
