A special school in Bradford are seeking a Teaching Assistant on a full time basis to assist and support pupils with special educational and general learning needs.
This is a full time (term time only) role, on a temporary basis for a minimum of 6 months. Following this period, there may be an opportunity to apply for a permanent role within school.
The school provides a differentiated, sensory curriculum for pupils with a range of Special Educational needs, including Autism, Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs and Profound and Multiple Learning Diasbilities.
The successful applicant will provide support for pupils with special educational needs. As a Teaching Assistant, you will ensure that the pupils can integrate as fully as possible in the activities generally undertaken by the other children in the class and make progress.
Duties will include running specific programmes and activities to assist the pupils' individual learning and social needs. You will be responsible for implementing the targets on the pupils' Individual Education Plan (IEP) in liaison with the class teachers and the SENCo.
You will liaise with the SENCO, Head Teacher, Class teachers, Deputy Head and other support staff, which may include outside agencies, e.g. Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, should the need arise.
Your main role is to provide support for pupils with special educational needs. You will ensure that pupils can integrate as fully as possible in learning activities, working with colleagues to create an engaging and stimulating learning environment, promoting independence.
Due to the nature of pupil needs, you will also be required to support pupils with their personal care needs.
Responsibilities:
- To provide learning support for pupils in class or in 1:1 situations
- To develop knowledge of the particular needs of the children and seek advice from the SENCo, class teacher and outside agencies as required
- To aid access to the full range of learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom and provide modified materials as required e.g. worksheets, games, visual prompt cards etc.
- To make or modify resources as suggested and advised by the SENCo, Educational Psychologist or other outside agencies
- To organise and maintain an inclusive learning environment across the whole school environment
- Provide positive reinforcements, praise and rewards to pupils
- Facilitate inclusion in small group activities with peers and support interaction
- To work as part of the team to ensure that the well being and personal development of the pupil enhances their learning opportunities and life skills.
- To foster links between home and school
- To understand and apply the school policies on learning and behaviour, and the statutory guidelines relating to disability discrimination and Special Educational Needs
You will have previous experience of working with children with special educational needs, ideally within a specialist setting.
Miniumum requirements:
- Knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of pupils
- An interest in how children learn and behave and a genuine passion to support those who find learning and managing their behaviour difficult
- The ability to demonstrate appropriate models of behaviour both in the classroom and around school, acting as a positive role model for pupils
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and appropriately to pupils with different abilities, interests and backgrounds
- The ability to plan and prioritise tasks and work under pressure
- Patience and flexibility, with a clear understanding of how children might behave who find learning new concepts and remembering taught concepts difficult
