The Head Teacher and SENCo at a welcoming primary school in Blackburn are seeking a committed and compassionate Family Support Worker to join our team from September 2025 for the full academic year. This is a vital role within our inclusive and nurturing school, providing targeted support for children across the primary age range.

About the Role

Working closely with our existing Family Support Worker, class teachers, SENCO and wider pastoral team, you will support pupils who are vulnerable due to social, emotional, mental health (SEMH) needs, low attendance, or significant life events such as bereavement or trauma. Your work will help pupils feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

This role bridges both pupil and family support, with a strong focus on building trusted relationships that promote wellbeing and academic progress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs

  • Support children reintegrating after time away from school (e.g. due to anxiety, illness, or school refusal)

  • Offer emotional support to pupils experiencing bereavement, trauma, or distress

  • Monitor and address attendance concerns, working alongside the Family Support Worker and SLT to implement supportive interventions

  • Help pupils regulate their emotions, manage behaviour and build resilience

  • Attend multi-agency meetings and liaise with external professionals where appropriate

  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to safeguarding and pastoral planning

  • Support whole-school wellbeing initiatives, clubs and interventions

  • Champion the school’s Catholic ethos, promoting a safe, inclusive environment where every child is respected and nurtured

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience supporting vulnerable pupils in a school or related setting

  • Understands SEMH and trauma-informed practice

  • Can build strong, positive relationships with both children and families

  • Communicates effectively and professionally as part of a team

  • Demonstrates a calm, empathetic and resilient attitude

  • Is proactive, flexible and able to respond to the changing needs of pupils

  • Understands the importance of safeguarding and confidentiality

In return, we offer:

  • A warm and inclusive school environment in Blackburn

  • A committed and supportive staff team

  • Opportunities for training and professional development

  • A chance to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives
