Classroom Support

Date posted : 23/05/19
£285 - £315 per day

Job description

This vacancy has now expired. Please see similar roles below...

If you have a passion for child development and would love your role to be working with them on a day to day basis, we are looking to hire classroom assistants to work in classrooms supporting children with learning disabilities in South Manchester.

The Role

You will be expected to work full time school hours (approx 8.30am-3.30pm) Monday to Friday, and may be supporting a number of students or be assigned to just one depending on their needs. The school is easily accessible by public transport.
The children will have a mixture of needs such as Autism, Aspergers, Downs Syndrome and others, and also may have physical disabilities. Some of the students may use alternative forms of communication such as PECS (picture cards), British Sign Language or Makaton, so any knowledge of these is a bonus.
Your role as Classroom Support will be to ensure each of the children feel comfortable and relaxed within the classroom and help them to interact and involve themselves in classroom activities. Some challenging behaviour may arise so you will be expected to manage this appropriately, ensuring a calm and understanding approach towards each child's specific needs.

Please be aware that some students may need additional help with toileting and mealtimes, which you may be required to assist with.

You

Ideally you should have experience or knowledge of special educational needs (Autism, Aspergers, Downs Syndrome) either professional or personal to have a better understanding of the students you work with, or experience in childcare.
You must be patient and non-judgemental and enthusiastic about the students progression and learning.

You must have an enhanced, child only DBS which is registered to the update service or be willing to apply for one via Teaching Personnel.

Other key skills include;

  • British Sign Language
  • PECS
  • Makaton
  • Lego Therapy
  • Sensory Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Phonics
