Behaviour Mentor
Job description
This vacancy has now expired. Please see similar roles below...
Easter is on the horizon and based on the surge of supply requirements across multiple local schools we are keen to recruit the best staff for our schools we work in partnership with.
Every year, we see a noticeable gear shift with supply needs after the Easter holidays, particularly in light of the number of student exclusions from mainstream primary and secondary schools. Teaching Personnel is inundated with vacancies from SENCOs needing staff to support their pupils in the SEN department. Of course, they don't have time to publish an advert, shortlist and interview so they come to Teaching Personnel for help.
We have specialised in SEN across Bristol for many years and our "bread and butter" so to speak are requests for behaviour mentors.
What is a behaviour Mentor?
Nine times out of ten a Behaviour Mentor is someone who supports a pupil or a small group of pupils on a full-time basis who have either a neurological disorder such as ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) or SEMH (Social, Emotional or Mental Health). You job is to manage behaviour, act as a role model and support them academically. You will be fully supported under the guidance of the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.)
What makes a good Behaviour Mentor?
There are three key attributes to a successful Behaviour Mentor. Firstly you will need to be confident. This means setting boundaries, taking control of situations and making tough decisions, especially in terms of discipline. You must be patient. There are no overnight fixes and these pupils are very challenging. If you get frustrated by not making giant leaps in the first few weeks this is NOT for you. These things take time but are extremely rewarding when changes are made. Lastly you need to be committed. Some of these pupils have very chaotic lives and you are there to provide stability and support. We are not looking for someone for a couple of weeks but for multiple school terms. However, you will have the chance to visit the school, meet the children and the SENCO before you commit to the role.
Do I need qualifications or experience?
Yes, you will need to have Maths and English GCSEs, grade C or above. You don't require a degree but schools particular like graduates so this is advantageous but not essential.
If you would like to gain a qualification in behaviour management, we offer our candidates to go on our Team Teach course as we have an in house Team Teach trainer. Please call for further details.
In terms of experience, you will need the following: either school or education based experience or SEN experience with either children or adults in or out of school.
What are the benefits?
- You will be supported fully throughout with training provided
- Hugely rewarding role where results are truly life changing
- 8:30 - 3:30, Monday to Friday
- Invaluable experience if you wish to pursue a career in Education
How do I apply?
Contact me immediately via email or phone to register your interest. As you have registered with Teaching Personnel, the process should be quick and easy.
I look forward to hearing from you.
