Youth Worker - Wakefield City Centre

An Alternative Education Provider in the heart of Wakefield is seeking a Youth Worker for the Spring term. This is a full-time, temporary contract until July 2019. Following a successful probationary period, there will be an opportunity to apply for a permanent role.

The school is based in WF1 and is spread over three individual sites which all provide alternative education to young people aged 11-16 with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. As a Youth Worker, you'll guide and support young people in their personal, social and educational development; accessing a vocational curriculum which includes Animal Care, Music Production, Sports and Fitness and Motor Vehicle Maintenance.

We are seeking individuals with:

  • A strong commitment to young people and an understanding of the factors affecting their lives
  • The ability to provide reliable support to young people and act with integrity in times of stress
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish good relationships with young people
  • A great deal of resilience

The ideal candidate will have experience in Youth Support - however we will also consider applicants with experience in Behaviour Support, Mentoring, Social Care or Sports Coaching. We would also like to hear from you if you have qualifications such as: Working with Children, Young People and Families, Education Studies, Sports Science, Psychology and/or Counselling.

As a Youth Worker, you will:

  • Assess the needs of young people and work with teachers to correctly plan and deliver programmes related to areas such as health, fitness, smoking, drugs, gangs, violence, relationships and bullying
  • Mentor, coach and support individuals, encouraging greater social inclusion
  • Work in partnership with professionals from other organisations that support young people such as social care, health, police, education, youth offending teams and local authorities
  • Attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and local policy developments
  • Undertake administrative tasks, maintain effective recording systems and respond to queries
