Hours: 08:10 – 15:10, Monday to Friday | Full-Time (Term Time, Fixed Term)
Pay: £447 per week / £13.75 per hour (Paid PAYE, Term Time Only)

We are currently recruiting a Trainee Teaching Assistant to work in a well-regarded secondary school in Newport. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering a career in teaching, youth work, or Special Educational Needs (SEN/ALN) support.


About the School

This large, community-focused school is known for its inclusive values and strong commitment to pupil development. The Additional Learning Needs (ALN) team provides specialist support for students aged 11–16 with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

  • Moderate to Complex Learning Difficulties

The school has a caring SEN team who provide tailored interventions and small-group sessions, helping pupils build confidence and achieve their potential.


What the Role Involves

As a Trainee Teaching Assistant, you will work under the guidance of experienced staff to support pupils both in the classroom and in small intervention groups. Your role will include:

  • Supporting learners on a 1:1 or small-group basis

  • Helping pupils engage with lessons and tailored learning activities

  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Encouraging independence, social skills, and confidence

  • Assisting teachers with lesson preparation and classroom organisation

  • Contributing to wider school activities such as trips, clubs, and events

This is a fantastic first step into education, offering valuable experience for those looking to progress into teaching, SEN specialism, or long-term support roles in schools.


Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need previous school experience to apply – training will be provided. What matters most is enthusiasm, patience, and a genuine interest in helping young people succeed.

This role would suit:

  • Graduates in Psychology, Education, Social Sciences, or Performing Arts

  • Aspiring teachers looking for school-based experience before teacher training/PGCE

  • Youth workers, mentors, sports coaches, or care/support workers with transferable skills

  • Anyone with experience working with children or young people in a voluntary or professional setting
