Job Title: Teaching Assistant
Location: Newport
Hours: Monday to Friday (08:30 – 15:30 term time only)
Pay: £12.82
We are currently recruiting a Teaching Assistant to work within a mainstream primary school based in the Newport area. The role will entail supporting a pupil on a 1:1 basis that is currently undergoing a diagnosis of ASD (Autism). We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, passionate and has experience of supporting children or young adults with additional learning needs.
The headteacher is looking for someone who can provide a calm and empathetic influence on a child’s life. Historically the school has been impressed by those coming from a primary, psychology, sports, or mental health background, or who have worked with children from nursery to age 11.
Main Roles & Responsibilities
- Supervise and support the pupils in all areas of the curriculum.
- Shadow the pupils during all lessons throughout the day and potentially during lunch time.
- Establish productive working relationships with the pupil and set expectations.
- To give positive encouragement, feedback, and praise to reinforce pupils’ efforts and develop self-esteem.
- Promote the inclusion of the pupils to interact with each other.
- Liaise with the teacher to help support a positive learning environment.
- Under the instruction/guidance of the teacher support pupils with behavioural, emotional, and social development needs e.g., the implementation of behaviour management.
- De-escalate any situations if needed.
- Use communication and friendly strategies such as visual timetables and PECS
- Supporting the needs of the younger children with their toileting (may include changing pupils)
- Prepare and maintain the classroom provision for all children including the outdoor environment and ensuring all provisions are safe.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
