The diverse and rewarding role of a TEACHING ASSISTANT is perfect for those passionate about positively influencing children's lives and pursuing a career in education.
As a Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities can vary day by day, including providing 1-2-1 support for pupils with Special Educational Needs, conducting English and Maths booster sessions for small groups, and assisting with general classroom tasks such as activity setup and administrative duties.
Job titles for this role can vary, and you may also be referred to as:
- 1:1 SEN Support Worker
- SEN Specialist
- Learning Support Assistant
- Behaviour Mentor
- General Teaching Assistant
- Classroom Assistant
- HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant)
WHAT WILL A TYPICAL WORKDAY ENTAIL?
Your tasks will depend on your experience, training, and TA status, and may include:
- Delivering tailored teaching activities to pupils either one-to-one or in small groups
- Ensuring engaged learning and task focus among supported pupils during lessons
- Supporting social and emotional development, promptly reporting any issues as necessary
- Assisting the teacher in managing challenging behavior and fostering positive behavior
- Contributing to lesson planning
- With experience, potentially specializing in literacy, numeracy, or SEN.
QUALIFICATIONS
While entry routes into Teaching Assistant roles vary, employers typically seek candidates with a combination of relevant experience and qualifications, such as:
- BA Special Educational Needs, Disability & Inclusion
- BA Early Childhood Studies
- BA Education Studies
- CACHE Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant
- Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
- Level 1/2/3 Childcare
To work with children, young people, and vulnerable groups, you'll need to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
SKILLS
Key skills required include:
- Effective communication and listening abilities
- Building and maintaining rapport with both adults and children
- Remaining calm under pressure, especially when faced with challenging behavior
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Relevant language skills may be necessary depending on the supported service users and communities.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Relevant work experience with children in an educational setting, whether paid or voluntary, is essential. Opportunities for experience can be found in various environments, such as children's homes, family community centers, nurseries, and schools.
