Teaching Assistant

We are working with an OFSTED rated 'Good' client  in the North Derbyshire area, who require a full time Teaching Assistant from September 2020.

About the School:

The school is a specialist school for children and young people with Autism and Learning Difficulties, aged 4 - 19 years old. There is a primary hub and a specialist 14 - 19 site nearby. The school is split into Lower, Middle and Upper School.

• Lower school: Incorporates early reading and maths, and life skills such as play, social skills and accessing the community
• Middle School:  Provides a transition between Lower School, the primary department, and Upper School, for students aged 14-19 who follow a cross-curricular timetable based around literacy and numeracy, functional life skills, and vocational skills based around work experience
• Upper School: For pupils aged 16+, the curriculum is based around functional literacy and numeracy skills e.g. reading timetables, functional life skills e.g. recognising signs, and vocational skills (including work experience placement). Students also have the opportunity to achieve ASDAN qualifications and Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The careers curriculum in the specialist FE site focuses on Education and Employment, Independence, Health and Wellbeing, and Friendships, Relationships and Community 

The school also benefits from a collaborative staff team of Therapists (Speech and Language, and Occupational Therapists) , teachers and teaching assistants, who work together as a multi-disciplinary team focussed around individual learning needs of each child, and contributing to IEPs. 

The ideal candidate will be:

• An experienced Teaching Assistant who has worked in any type of SEN provisions
• Someone with experience of Autism - either personally or professionally
• An understanding of how Autistic children may have delayed processing, so a patient approach is required at all times
• Experienced with Makaton and/or PECS or other communication aids
• Patient, nurturing and able to work with pupils who may have significantly impaired communication needs
• Aware of the sensory difficulties children on the Autistic spectrum may present with
• Support workers or care workers with experience of learning difficulties and Autism

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
