Children who have been excluded from mainstream school or have needs which mean that they are unable to cope with the regular structure of their classes and timetable. In these cases, often, the students will attend a Pupil Referral Unit where their specific needs can be attended to more thoroughly, and where they can be given the support they need to succeed.
In a PRU, students will study core subjects but also take part in many vocational activities to help them build their social skills, emotional well-being and overall be more independent and confident.
These students can offer some challenging behaviours and can be difficult to engage with, therefore they require teaching assistants who give time and patience to deal with an crisis or outbursts which may come along. These challenging behaviours can be testing so it is important to be resilient and calm at all times, whilst keeping a level head.
Teaching Personnel do prefer candidates to have some experience working in this environment or similar before applying, and are able to offer further training for registered candidates.
