Special Needs Teaching Assistant

Special Needs Teaching Assistant in Barnsley- job role may also be known as Special Needs Support Assistant/ Welfare Assistant. You will be employed by Teaching Personnel, supporting in the local schools we work with. The children you support will have a range of needs which could include autism, communication and interaction difficulties, physical disabilities and moderate to severe learning difficulties.

What a typical day may include:

  • Supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in and around the classroom in small groups or 1:1
  • Working alongside a welcoming team including teachers and medical staff to ensure children receive the best care
  • Helping students with their personal development and learning
  • Assisting in personal care
  • Accommodating interactive classroom activities
  • Helping children move around provisions safely

Most importantly you will be an encouraging mentor to motivate your students and have a positive impact on the lives of children and young people!

Relevant experience:

  • Supporting children with special educational needs
  • Youth work
  • A degree in childhood studies, social work, sports coaching, education or psychology
  • Care homes
  • Children's homes

Pay and Working Hours:

You will receive weekly pay based on roles and experience (between £57-£70 a day for Special Needs Teaching Assistants).

Teaching Personnel gives you the flexibility to pick the days you would like to work and gives you roles based on your preferences.

You can choose if you want day to day work where we call you in the morning or longer term roles such as maternity cover that could see you in schools for a couple of weeks. There is also the opportunity to roll onto the school's contract permanently if you and the school get on well!

It is an online portal where you can browse and book the most relevant up to date CPD courses available. You can also update your work diary, your portfolio and easily view your pay slips.
