Special Needs Support - Portsmouth

Teaching Personnel are currently seeking experienced SEN support workers to work on a one-to-one basis with pupils with complex Special Educational Needs (SEN). Attending pupils will be working at a variety of needs, including those who have: Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Needs and Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD).

The large majority of attending pupils are non-verbal, so physical contact will be experienced; so applicants must be comfortable working in this environment. Previous training is imperative, as using your own initiative and being able to work independently is a pivotal aspect of this position.

This attending pupils will demonstrate complex needs and challenging behaviour. Class sizes are usually around 6-8 pupils in a class, with one class teacher and two or three TA's, and a lot of the day might include 1:1 working.

Relevant training includes:

  • Moving and Handling
  • Team Teach
  • PECS
  • Makaton
  • Application of medication

The role:

Candidates applying for this position will be required to support a class teacher; assisting with aspects of personal care and general emotional well-being and educational support. In addition this will work in a collaborative nature with other members of staff, as up to 4 teaching assistants will be monitoring pupils in the class at any one time.

Full and part time roles available operating between Mondays - Friday and between 8.30am and 3.30pm. All roles will start as temporary, but will present the opportunity to be permanent depending on the applicants fit within the school. Pay scales will vary, but will be a minimum of ÂŁ9.00 per hour.
