Job Description
The role of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor involves providing tailored educational support to children and young people with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities. The SEN Tutor works closely with pupils to develop personalised learning plans that address individual needs, enabling progress in academic and social development. This role requires a compassionate, patient, and adaptable approach to teaching, ensuring an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition to pupils with special educational needs, adapting teaching methods to suit individual learning styles and abilities.
- Assess pupils’ current skills and needs to develop and implement personalised learning plans.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, providing regular feedback to parents, carers, and relevant educational professionals.
- Support the development of communication, social, and behavioural skills alongside academic learning.
- Utilise a variety of teaching resources and assistive technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with schools, parents, and other professionals to ensure consistency of support and to share strategies for pupil development.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, educational frameworks, and best practise in special educational needs provision.
- Promote positive behaviour and encourage pupil engagement and confidence in learning.
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-organised learning environment.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification or diploma in special educational needs, education, or a related subject.
- Safeguarding training and clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Education
- A minimum of GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent.
- Further education or qualifications in special educational needs or relevant teaching practise are desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs in an educational or tutoring setting.
- Experience in developing and delivering individualised learning plans.
- Familiarity with a range of additional needs including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and speech and language difficulties.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of special educational needs and inclusive education principles.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build rapport with pupils and their families.
- Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting pupils with diverse needs.
- Ability to adapt teaching styles and materials to suit individual pupil requirements.
- Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Capable of working independently and managing time effectively within a part-time, temporary framework.
Preferred Qualifications
- Level 3 Award or Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent.
- Experience with behaviour management techniques and positive reinforcement strategies.
- Training or experience in the use of assistive technologies for SEN learners.
Working Conditions
- The role is based within the home, school, or alternative educational settings in Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas.
- Part-time hours, flexible scheduling to accommodate pupil availability and requirements.
- Temporary contract with the possibility of extension based on funding and pupil needs.
- Requires travel to various locations within South East England; a valid driving licence and access to transport are advantageous but not essential.
- May involve working with children with complex needs, requiring a calm and professional approach at all times.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
