Teaching Personnel is currently seeking a confident, proactive, and resilient individual to join a supportive SEN school in Bury as a Teaching Assistant.

This opportunity is ideal for those looking to build a long-term career in education, SEN, psychology, or youth support. While this role will particularly appeal to graduates, a degree is not required — instead, we are looking for candidates with hands-on experience working with young people.

The school supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and a wide range of needs including:

  • Autism
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
  • Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD)
  • Sensory processing needs
  • Social, emotional, and behavioural challenges

About the Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide consistent, nurturing, and tailored support.

You will help create a safe and engaging environment, supporting pupils’ academic progress, emotional regulation, and independence.

A key part of the role is understanding that behaviour is a form of communication, using positive and trauma-informed approaches to support students effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support students with additional needs in line with their EHCPs
  • Deliver 1:1 and small group support, adapting tasks to individual abilities
  • Use tools such as visual timetables, PECS, and sensory strategies
  • Recognise triggers and support pupils using de-escalation techniques
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students
  • Assist with personal care and mobility support where required
  • Promote a structured, safe, and inclusive learning environment

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience working with young people (school, care, youth work, coaching, etc.)
  • Confident, proactive, and able to take initiative
  • Patient, adaptable, and emotionally resilient
  • Ability to remain calm in challenging situations
  • Willingness to support personal care needs
  • Full-time availability and commitment to a long-term role

Desirable:

  • Experience supporting individuals with SEN (Autism, PMLD, behavioural needs)
  • Knowledge of positive behaviour support or trauma-informed practice
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to undertake training)
