School Support Staff – SEN Schools

Location: Wigan
Employer: Teaching Personnel
Start Date: Immediate and Ongoing

Are you passionate about making a real difference in young people’s lives? Teaching Personnel are currently recruiting School Support Staff to work across a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools in the Wigan area. These schools support pupils with a variety of additional needs, including autism (ASC), ADHD, social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), learning difficulties, speech and language needs, and behavioural challenges.

This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are patient, resilient, and eager to support pupils who require a more tailored, hands-on approach to education.


Roles Available

We are looking to fill a variety of positions, including:

  • Teaching Assistants
  • Cover Supervisors
  • Behaviour Intervention Staff

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your role, your duties may include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis or within small groups
  • Delivering pre-planned lessons in the absence of the teacher (Cover Supervisors)
  • Implementing strategies to support behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Building positive relationships to encourage engagement and trust
  • Assisting teachers in adapting lessons to meet individual needs
  • Supporting pupils with communication, social skills, and learning development
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment
  • Managing challenging behaviour calmly and effectively

✅ What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking dedicated and adaptable individuals who thrive in dynamic environments.

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people (schools, care, youth work, coaching, etc.)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A calm, patient, and resilient attitude
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour positively
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

Desirable:

  • Experience working within SEN or alternative provision settings
  • Knowledge of autism, SEMH, or behaviour management strategies
  • Team Teach or similar training

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
