SEN Learning Support Assistant
Job description
Learning Support Assistant
We are looking for a dedicated, patient, and compassionate Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join a welcoming and supportive Special Educational Needs (SEN) school. This role is initially offered on an agency basis, with the strong possibility of progressing into a permanent position for the right candidate. It is a rewarding opportunity for individuals who are committed to helping children and young people with additional needs reach their full potential.
The Role:
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play an important part in the day-to-day learning and personal development of pupils with a wide range of special educational needs. These may include autism, ADHD, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, speech and language difficulties, and complex learning requirements.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Working under the guidance of teachers and SEN specialists to support pupils both in the classroom and in small group settings.
-
Providing one-to-one assistance tailored to the needs of individual pupils, ensuring they are engaged, motivated, and able to access learning opportunities.
-
Assisting with academic tasks, therapeutic activities, and personal development programmes designed to build confidence, independence, and life skills.
-
Helping with behaviour management strategies, encouraging positive behaviour, and offering emotional support when pupils are experiencing challenges.
-
Supporting with personal care routines where required, always promoting dignity and respect.
-
Contributing to a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment where every pupil feels valued and supported.
-
Working collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and other professionals to ensure consistency and the best possible outcomes for pupils.
Requirements:
We are seeking individuals who have a genuine passion for working with children and young people. While experience in an SEN or educational setting is highly desirable, we also welcome applicants with transferable skills from childcare, youth work, social care, or similar backgrounds.
Essential qualities include:
-
Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
-
A flexible and adaptable approach to work, with a willingness to learn new strategies.
-
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and families.
-
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children at all times.
Benefits:
-
A competitive hourly rate, paid weekly.
-
Comprehensive training and ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and confidence.
-
The opportunity to gain valuable experience in a well-established SEN school with the potential for a permanent contract.
-
Continuous support from a dedicated consultant who will guide you throughout your placement.
