SEMH Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel is working closely with a specialist SEMH provision in Wigan that supports pupils aged 11–16 who are no longer in mainstream education. We are looking to appoint resilient and nurturing SEMH Teaching Assistants to work alongside experienced staff in providing tailored support for students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs.
These pupils often display challenging behaviour, have experienced trauma, or struggle with emotional regulation. Your role will be key in helping them re-engage with education in a safe and structured environment.
The Role:
As an SEMH TA, you will:

Work 1:1 or in small groups to support students with behaviour, emotional needs, and learning.

Help deliver personalised interventions focused on emotional resilience, anger management, and social skills.

Use positive behaviour strategies and Team Teach (or similar) approaches to de-escalate situations.

Build trusting relationships with pupils who may have attachment difficulties or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

Be a positive role model and consistent adult presence.
About You:
We welcome applicants from education, youth work, social care, or similar backgrounds.
Essential:
-
A calm, patient, and consistent approach to behaviour.
-
Experience working with young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or trauma (formal or informal).

Ability to stay calm under pressure and use your initiative.
-
Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
Desirable:
-
Team Teach, MAPA or de-escalation training (can be provided).

Background in mentoring, youth work, sports coaching or psychology.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
