Job description

Salaried Teacher Training Programme

Location: Southampton
Start Date: January 2027
Salary: £23,000-£27,000 per annum

Start Your Journey into Teaching

Are you a graduate looking for a rewarding career where you can make a real difference? Have you ever considered becoming a teacher but would like the opportunity to gain some experience before committing to formal training?

Our two-year Salaried Future Teacher Programme offers you the chance to do just that. Based in a mainstream secondary school in Southampton, you'll earn a salary while gaining valuable classroom experience, learning from experienced teachers and working towards becoming a fully qualified teacher.

Rather than going straight into teacher training, you'll spend your first year getting to know school life, building relationships with pupils and developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom. In your second year, you'll progress into formal teacher training, working towards a fully funded PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

It's an excellent opportunity to learn on the job, develop your skills and take your first steps towards a long-term career in teaching.

What Will the Programme Involve?

Year 1 – Learn the Role and Gain Experience

Your first year will give you a real insight into life in a secondary school. You'll work alongside teachers and support staff, spend time in the classroom and get involved in the day-to-day running of the school.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Support pupils with their learning and help them build confidence in the classroom.
  • Observe experienced teachers and learn how to plan and deliver effective lessons.
  • Develop your communication, organisation and behaviour management skills.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and colleagues.
  • Gain an understanding of how to support pupils with different abilities and learning needs.
  • Take part in training and professional development, with guidance from experienced staff.

This first year is all about learning, asking questions and gaining the practical experience that will help prepare you for the next stage of your training.

Year 2 – Train to Become a Qualified Teacher

Once you've developed your experience and confidence, you'll progress into formal teacher training and begin taking on more responsibility in the classroom.

You'll work towards:

  • Planning and delivering engaging lessons that support pupils' learning.
  • Developing your own teaching style and classroom management skills.
  • Adapting lessons and resources to meet different learning needs.
  • Assessing pupil progress and helping pupils work towards their goals.
  • Working closely with an experienced mentor who will support your development.
  • Completing a fully funded PGCE and working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

By the end of the programme, you'll have gained valuable school experience alongside the training and qualifications needed to begin your career as a qualified teacher.

Who Would Suit This Programme?

We're looking for enthusiastic, committed individuals who enjoy working with young people and want to make a positive difference to their education.

You might be a recent graduate ready to start your career, or someone considering a change of direction and looking for a more rewarding role. Whatever your background, we'd love to hear from you if you're motivated to learn and interested in becoming a teacher.

To be considered, you'll need:

  • A bachelor's degree in any subject.
  • A genuine interest in education and helping young people succeed.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Patience, resilience and a positive approach.
  • The ability to build supportive relationships with pupils and colleagues.
  • A willingness to learn, take feedback on board and develop your skills.

You don't need previous teaching experience to apply. What matters most is your attitude, commitment and willingness to learn. You'll be supported throughout the programme as you build the skills and confidence needed for the classroom.

What Can You Expect in Return?

As well as gaining valuable experience in a mainstream secondary school, you'll receive:

  • A competitive salary of £23,000-£27,000 per annum.
  • Paid employment from the start of the programme.
  • Fully funded PGCE training.
  • The opportunity to work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Practical, hands-on experience across two years.
  • Support and mentoring from experienced teachers and school staff.
  • Ongoing opportunities to develop your skills and confidence.
  • A clear pathway into a career in secondary school teaching.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Becoming a teacher is about more than delivering lessons. It's about inspiring young people, helping them overcome challenges and giving them the opportunity to reach their potential.

If you're ready to learn, take on a new challenge and build a career that makes a difference, this programme could be the perfect place to start.
