If you're interested in teaching but want to gain practical classroom experience before committing to formal teacher training, this two-year salaried programme could be the ideal route.

Starting in January 2027, you'll join a school in Coventry and spend your first year working as a Cover Supervisor. This will give you the opportunity to develop your confidence, understand the day-to-day realities of teaching and build valuable classroom management skills.

Following a successful first year, you'll progress into formal teacher training, working towards your PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) while continuing to develop your experience in school.

The programme is suitable for recent graduates, career changers and individuals with experience working with young people who are looking for a supported route into teaching.

What Does the Programme Involve?

First Year: Build Your Classroom Experience

During your first year, you'll work as a Cover Supervisor and become an established member of the school community.

Your role will include:

• Delivering pre-prepared lessons in the absence of the class teacher.
• Managing the classroom and maintaining a positive learning environment.
• Supporting pupils to remain engaged with their learning.
• Developing effective behaviour management techniques.
• Building professional relationships with pupils and colleagues.
• Learning how a school operates on a day-to-day basis.
• Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff.
• Developing the confidence needed to progress into teacher training.

This stage of the programme gives you the opportunity to gain meaningful school experience and decide what kind of teacher you want to become.

Second Year: Begin Your Teacher Training

Once you've built a strong foundation in the classroom, you'll move into your formal training year.

You will begin to take greater responsibility for teaching and will:

• Plan and deliver your own lessons.
• Develop your teaching style and subject knowledge.
• Assess pupil progress and provide constructive feedback.
• Receive guidance and support from an experienced mentor.
• Complete your fully funded PGCE.
• Work towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Prepare for your future career as a qualified teacher.
