Position: Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant Location: Hull Contract: Full-time/Part-time

Your Role: As a Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs, ensuring their mental health needs are met within the educational setting. Your key responsibilities will include:

1️⃣ Collaborating with the teaching team to create a safe and nurturing classroom environment that promotes positive mental health and emotional well-being.

2️⃣ Providing one-on-one or small group support to students, helping them develop coping strategies, manage anxiety, and build resilience.

3️⃣ Working closely with the school's mental health professionals, therapists, and other specialists to implement personalized support plans.

4️⃣ Assisting students in accessing educational materials, facilitating their participation in classroom activities, and promoting engagement and interaction.

5️⃣ Encouraging the development of social skills, emotional regulation, and self-esteem through targeted interventions and structured activities.

6️⃣ Documenting and reporting observations of student progress, behavior, and well-being to the teaching team and mental health professionals.

Requirements:

  • A genuine passion for supporting the mental health and well-being of students with special needs.
  • Experience working with individuals who have mental health challenges (previous experience in a school or mental health setting is preferred).
  • Knowledge of various mental health conditions and the ability to implement appropriate strategies to support students' specific needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with students, parents, and the wider school community.
  • Empathy, patience, and the ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations.
  • An understanding of safeguarding practices and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Qualifications:

  • A relevant qualification in mental health support, psychology, counseling, or a related field is desirable but not essential. However, relevant experience and a commitment to ongoing professional development in mental health and special education are highly valued.
