Are you an experienced support worker looking to move into education and use your skills in a structured, rewarding environment?
We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants to work across specialist SEN and SEMH schools in Gloucester (GL1, GL2 and GL19). These are long-term, full-time roles supporting children and young people with additional needs, offering a clear pathway into education with ongoing training and career development.
Your experience supporting individuals with complex needs, behavioural challenges or mental health will be highly valued in these settings.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will support pupils both academically and emotionally, helping them to feel settled, safe and engaged in school.
You will work with students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, supporting behaviour, routines and learning throughout the school day.
Pupils you support may have:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
- Autism (ASC), ADHD or communication needs
- Anxiety, attachment needs or behavioural challenges
- Additional learning or sensory needs
Some pupils may present behaviours that challenge, so confidence, consistency and a calm, professional approach are essential.
Specialist Schools Across Gloucester
You will be placed within one of three specialist school settings:
- GL19 – Secondary setting
- GL1 – Primary and girls’ secondary setting
- GL2 – Girls-only secondary setting
Each school offers:
- Small class sizes and strong staff support
- Established behaviour and pastoral frameworks
- Structured environments with clear routines
- Opportunities to work alongside experienced SEN professionals
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils 1:1 and in small groups within the classroom
- Assist with behaviour management strategies and daily routines
- Build positive and consistent relationships with students
- Support emotional regulation and engagement in learning
- Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral teams
- Contribute to a calm, structured and safe learning environment
Who This Role Is Suitable For
This role is ideal for individuals with a background in:
- Support work (residential care, supported living, outreach)
- Mental health or youth work
- Behaviour support or SEMH settings
- Care roles involving children or vulnerable individuals
You will be particularly well suited if you:
- Have experience supporting individuals with additional needs or behaviours that challenge
- Are resilient, patient and confident in managing behaviour
- Are looking to move into a more structured, term-time role
- Want to build a long-term career within SEN education
Training & Career Progression
This role offers a clear pathway into education, including:
- Funded Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualifications
- Ongoing CPD in SEN, behaviour and safeguarding
- Hands-on experience within specialist school environments
