Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary school in Bury from September 2026.
This welcoming and supportive setting caters for pupils aged 3 to 11 years with a range of complex learning needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). About the Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to help pupils access learning and achieve their individual targets.
This is a highly rewarding role where you'll support children both academically and personally, adapting your approach to meet a wide variety of communication, sensory, and developmental needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with PMLD, SLD, and ASD
- Assist in delivering personalised learning programmes linked to EHCP outcomes
- Adapt classroom activities to meet individual learning and sensory needs
- Support communication through methods such as PECS, Makaton, visual timetables, and other alternative communication systems
- Encourage positive behaviour through consistency, patience, and strong relationships
- Facilitate sensory-based, play-based, and experiential learning activities
- Promote confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing
- Support personal care requirements, including feeding, changing, toileting, and mobility assistance where required
- Help maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs
- Understanding of, or experience working with, pupils with PMLD, SLD, or ASD
- A patient, resilient, and caring approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Confidence supporting pupils with complex learning needs
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and individual requirements
- Commitment to a full-time, long-term position
- Comfortable providing personal care support where required
Desirable
- Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, AAC, or other communication strategies
- Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant SEN training
- Previous experience in a specialist school or SEND environment
