Thinking about becoming a teacher but want to gain some real classroom experience first?

Our Future Teachers Programme in Manchester is a great opportunity for graduates who are considering a career in education and want to understand what working in a school is really like before committing to teacher training.

Starting in November, you’ll have the opportunity to work in a school, gain valuable hands-on experience and develop the skills you’ll need to progress into formal teacher training.

What does the programme involve?

You’ll spend up to two years gaining paid experience in a school, working alongside experienced teachers and supporting pupils in the classroom.

Depending on your experience, interests and the school you’re placed in, you could work in roles such as:

• Teaching Assistant
• Cover Supervisor

The programme is designed to give you a genuine insight into school life. You’ll be working directly with pupils, building your confidence and learning how schools operate, while being supported by experienced staff.

You won’t be expected to walk into a classroom and know everything straight away. The aim is to help you develop your skills and understand whether teaching is the right career for you.

You’ll be paid while you gain experience

One of the biggest benefits of the programme is that this is a salaried opportunity.

You can earn between £23,000 and £27,000 per year while gaining practical school experience and preparing for the next stage of your teaching career.

There are no tuition fees and no student loans for the programme itself — you’re employed and paid while you gain valuable experience.

Training and support

Throughout the programme, you’ll have support from experienced education professionals who can help you develop your classroom skills and confidence.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about:

• Supporting pupils effectively
• Managing behaviour in the classroom
• Building positive relationships with students
• Working alongside teachers and school staff
• Understanding how a school operates
• Developing the skills needed for future teacher training

For graduates who know they want to teach but aren’t quite ready to jump straight into a PGCE or teacher training, this can be a really useful stepping stone.

What happens after the programme?

The longer-term aim is to help you progress into formal teacher training, whether that’s through a salaried route or a PGCE.

By gaining experience first, you’ll have a much better understanding of what teaching involves and will enter your teacher training with real classroom experience behind you.
