Cover supervisor duties

The cover supervisor’s main job is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set. However, the role of a cover supervisor can go further than that and include the following duties: Teaching grammar; Managing behaviour; Discussing and debating texts with pupils and answering questions; Differentiating and allocating extension exercises.

Qualifications needed

Cover supervisors are often highly qualified and may even have QTS. Many schools specify an honours degree as a minimum educational requirement and like cover supervisors to have experience of working with young people.

Skills and knowledge

The following are desirable:

Highly adaptable as there is no a regular timetable;

Have a thick skin;

Behaviour management skills;

Be diplomatic.
